Lake Naivasha, an important Great Rift Valley Lake in Kenya is in trouble. It is polluted by silt, agrochemicals, and urban effluent. Unless a solution is found the Lake will die. All the land and water problems within its large catchment area show up in the lake: waste water from Naivasha town, agro chemicals from nearby intensive export crop businesses, and soil erosion throughout its 2,500 sq km watershed attributed to small scale and very intensive unprotected farming. Community and technical solutions are required to avert disaster. The Vetiver System can provide part of the solution in all the problems areas. For more see

VETIVER SYSTEM - EROSION CONTROL - FEED BACK
I have dug out of our archives five papers of interest relating to Vetiver Systems erosion control programs in Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, and Thailand. They are of importance because of the upcoming workshop in Ethiopia and the general need for VS as a tool in dealing with the current world food crisis. An underling feature of all the reports is that adequate technical advice, farmer training, proper application and prolonged effort is required to assure long term success. The reports are: Ethiopia 1; Ethiopia 2; India; Indonesia; and Thailand.
Vetiver System and Fire. Vetiver will survive very hot fires and will recover quickly to continue being an effective erosion barrier and slope stabilizer. The images include pictures from Austalia, Malaysia, Vanuatu, and the most recent fires in California.
"Why are not more people using the Vetiver System technology???"

The Vetiver System has come a long way over the past 20 years and there are a lot of users applying the technology for different purposes. We know that most users, once using it correctly, are avid fans of the technology. The question is "why are not more people using the technology"? "Why is it not being used at an accelerated rate" or is it?
Here is a summary of responses from around the world.

COMPTABILITE NATIONALE ET PROJETS ENVIRONNEMENTAUX : CAS DU PROJET VETIVER AU MALI by Claude NJOMGANG & Abdoulaye TRAORE

THE USE OF VETIVERS IN COASTAL ENGINEERING

US Gulf States take note

A single hedge of Vetiver grass planted on the outer slope of a dike can reduce the wave run-up volume by 55%, in contrary with sod-forming grasses that give no reduction. Planting multiple hedges along the contour of the outer slope might result in even more reduction. The application of Vetiver grass on existing dikes may provide a substantial reinforcement of these dikes. Read more

NET POTS
Here is a neat idea from Paulraj Vincent who lives in Coimbatore,Thailand, India. "When planting Vetiver we normally use slips or poly bags. If we use slips, it takes 15-20 days to get root establishment with less than 100% survival. Of course cost wise cheap and easy to carry. With poly bags we get good rooting and almost nil mortality. But you have to spend more money and labor to carry from one place to another. With NETPOTS the plant grows immediately, they are very light to carry, cheaper than poly bags a little high than bare rooted slips. Using NETPOTS method Just we have to dig a small hole of 5 inches deep and keep the netpot inside. Why not we try this method for propagation so that we can get quick growth in the field and little space to grow more plants in the Nursery".
